generic codes and conventions

Codes and Conventions in media:


The media construct reality. The media have their own forms, codes and conventions. The media present ideologies and value messages.
The media are business that have commercial interests.

It is important that the target audience regognises the codes and conventions that are trying to be conveyed in the type of media.

Code -  
A code is a rule-governed system of signs, whose rules and
conventions are shared amongst members of a culture, and which is
used to generate and circulate meanings in and for that culture.

Convention - a custom or tradition, a standard of presentation or conduct.
Audiences negotiate meaning in media.


Horror codes and conventions:
- Dark/shadowy lighting.

-Disruption of normality.
-Sub plot of male/female relationship.
-Defeat of monster.
-Weapons, e.g. knife.

  1. Your paraphrasings of what is signified by the terms “convention” and “code” are general dictionary meanings as opposed to media specific ones. Refer to the pair of handouts you were given entitled “Media Conventions” and “Media Codes”.

    Your work is incomplete. You needed to list a number of conventions from three or four different genres (e.g. western, action/adventure, science fiction, horror). You also needed to explore technical codes at work. Anchor yourself with a specific moving image extract and explore how technical elements such as CAMERA, SOUND, MISE-EN-SCÈNE, EDITING or SPECIAL EFFECTS (which may also be conventions of the genre) are used to: communicate with / manipulate / engage the audience; and lead the audience to understand / think / feel / expect certain things.
